Counting systems
Even though a Blackjack player may stick
religiously to the basic strategy, they must always
bear in mind that this provides only a negligible advantage
over the house.
If a player is content to merely break even or walk
away with meagre winnings, then the use of basic strategy
on its own is fine. If however, a player wishes to further
maximise their advantage over the house, the learning
and application of some form of counting system is essential.
Despite the relative difficulty of this task, it is
guaranteed that a player’s profits will be directly
proportionate to the amount of effort they place into
mastering the various skills of the professional counter.
It must be remembered that counting systems do not
apply to online casinos, since the cards are shuffled
after every hand. This information is only for those
players who wish to take their blackjack playing pleasure
into the real world.
All bona fide counting systems aim to accomplish four
goals:
1. They indicate whom the odds are going to be in favour
of before the deal has taken place.
2. They determine to what degree the odds can be relied
upon, thereby allowing a player to determine their betting
range accordingly.
3. They indicate the best decision to make in terms
of insurance.
4. They determine to what extent a player should change
their basic strategy and indicate whether they should
move to a modified basic strategy, (the modified basic
strategy will be reviewed in full later).
